Check out the LA Clippers News and Updates Podcast, as I discuss the Clippers’ decision to hire Ty Lue as their next head coach, along with Chauncey Billups as associate head coach and Larry Drew as an assistant coach.

LA Clippers News and Updates is a new show on the 213Hoops podcast network, designed to give short, rapid reaction episodes whenever there is breaking news regarding the Clippers. This way, instead of waiting several days for next week’s hour-long discussion of the news, you can get bite-sized breakdowns of the news delivered to your phone as it happens.

The newest episode is out now and will be available here on Apple Podcasts and here on Spotify as soon as those platforms refresh their RSS feed. The episode is live now here, on Spreaker.

In it, I break down the Clippers’ decision to hire Lue, Billups, and Drew, as well as do a bit of examination of each coach’s record and give my assessment of the three hires. Interestingly, it won’t be any of the three’s first stint with LAC–Drew played point guard for the team in the 80s, Billups was briefly a Clipper near the end of his career, and Lue was an assistant coach under Doc Rivers twice, first in 2013-14 and then in 2019-20.

I hope you guys enjoy LA Clippers News and Updates, and give some comments and feedback on the format as I get the show underway this off-season and shape what it is going to look like moving forward. Please subscribe on whatever podcast platform you use, and if you leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts I’ll give you a shoutout on an upcoming episode!

Be sure to also check out the newest The Lob, The Jam, The Podcast to hear Cavaliers podcaster Justin Rowan’s take on Ty Lue’s coaching abilities during his time in Cleveland.

Listening to you guys has made me more optimistic about Lue. I think I’d still rather have had a new, innovative fresh face, but there’s definitely something to be said about not overthinking this.

If Lue has the respect of Kawhi, PG13, Zu, and anybody else we expect to be a core piece, that’s already 50% of the battle. The other 50% is the actual x’s and o’s, as well as making adjustments on the fly. I really hope Lue tailors his schemes to the personnel (watching Zu try to switch on every PnR was exhausting), and I hope he helps instill some discipline and fire into a locker room that sorely needed it last season. Also I hope Lue can convince the guys (mostly Bev, MM, and PG13) to talk less shit – keep the extracurriculars to a minimum, guys.

Buha: “Players like Patrick Beverley, Montrezl Harrell and Lou Williams bristled when Leonard was permitted to take games off to manage his body and to live in San Diego, which often led to him being late for team flights”

It looks like Trez & Lou still can’t accept the fact that this is Kawhi’s team. We have to get rid of them. They were nice players on a bad team or a borderline Playoffs team. But if you want to reach the next level, you have to move on from them. It’s sad because we have good memories but you have to get rid of their stupid ego.

      Pretty disappointing.

I do think we need a combination of more accountability for our stars and more buy-in from the role players. But if Ty doesn’t feel like Pat and Lou are bought in they need to go. Trez needs to go regardless.

Bev at least tried to understand Kawhi. And he even spent time working with Kawhi during the hiatus.

To me if they’re leaking this it portends the ouster of the cockroach three. Love all of them for various reasons but you are spot on about taking tings to another level. I hope we can SnT Trez but with this type of dirt out there he may look to hose us. Bev and ? for Ricky?

At some point, there is blame to go around for everyone. Kawhi took advantage of his status as the star player, having held the team hostage to make the trade for PG. While his load management was legit to manage his quad injury, Kawhi and PG need to be held accountable and it looks like Doc wasn’t going to do that out of fear of alienating them. It bodes well that Lue was able to hold LeBron accountable when LeBron was signing 1+1 contracts every year during his second Cavs stint. The sign of a great coach is if he/she is able and willing to hold accountable the best players accountable just as much as he/she would the rest of the roster.

I think Pat Bev, Lou, and Trez had a legitimate gripe, but at the same time, that is where the coach failed as much to hold Kawhi and PG accountable as much as Pat Bev, Lou, and Trez needed to be held accountable to buy in to sacrificing their egos and recognizing that the Clippers belong to Kawhi and PG now – Trez had a ton at stake especially since this will be his first real contract he is getting.

Yeah, Lou and Bev need to either accept the hierarchy and their roles or be moved. Also you know Klutch is leaking this crap to distract from Trez’ horrendous showing.

The Jovan Buha and Joe Vardon article in the Athletic about the Ty Lue hire is a great read.

Lou unfollowed Trez. He still follows everyone but Trezz.

I guess we know which one of them “leaked” this stuff. Not that it was hard to tell to begin w/. I don’t think I’ve gone from loving to hating a player as quickly as it’s happened for me w/ Trez this past season. I’m thankful for all the work he’s put in over the last couple of years, but it’s time to move on.

I think the Lue hire is fine. Our favorite NBA team is still loaded and will no longer be subject to Dr. Rivers’ malpractice. I’ve every confidence that the highly competent owner and front office will take appropriate measures regarding roster problems (Trez and possibly others) and that we’ll make another run at that first banner in short order.
