That being said, hypotheticals don’t make me feel any better, since we’ve already had our fair share of those over the years (e.g. what if Dunleavy didn’t put Daniel Ewing in, what if CP3 didn’t brain fart against OKC, what if Doc didn’t force Trez to guard Jokic, what if Kawhi hadn’t gotten Jingled). My problem is that I have no faith that 1. this FO has any idea how to surround the “core” of this team w/ young guys who can sop up a lot of minutes, and 2. even if they did, I still don’t think Kawhi will ever be healthy for a playoff run for us again.

I do think if Kawhi were healthy we would be a final 4 team with a shot to get to the finals and win it. However, I think even the FO realizes you can’t have a roster this old and be able to compete over the next 3 years as the younger teams get more experienced and we get older.

I have doubts as to whether Lue can has the willingness to adapt to the type of model we’ll need, but he does have the capability to do so if he’s properly incentivized. I think that involves not deferring to or indulging aging stars on roster choices; prioritizing and forcing Lue to play youth; and making a few moves to show we’re serious. Selling high on PG and Norm Powell while finding ways to get rid of expiring contracts in Tucker, Russ (and letting Plumlee go) are the types of moves that can revitalize this team as we enter the Intuit Dome.

OKC has a lot of picks and has made a lot of picks, but the truth is the only true star on their roster is the guy they traded for: SGA. A lot of their guys are getting exposed vs Dallas. That’s a team that needs to trade its way to improve the roster to take advantage of Shai’s prime. More draft picks aren’t the answer. Houston has too many picks. The Knicks have too many picks. The Clippers have no picks and a lot of aging vets who can be good complementary players. I think there is a synergy there for the Clippers to exploit.

This team is beyond over the hill and bereft of young talent.

…unfortunately, even if the team did make a trade like this, I have no faith that our scouting department would even take a guy who could contribute. By far my biggest gripe w/ this FO is how awful the scouting/draft evaluation has been.

I think that changes as we move into the new building. Paul George is accelerating that day of reckoning with his decision to decline his option and not budge from his ‘max’ contract demand.

…don’t mind me, I’m just huffing some copium over here in the corner.

But yeah, this is yet another pivotal offseason for this team. The Clippers ship has sprung a bunch of irreparable holes due to an aging frame and an incompetent captain, and if Ballmer doesn’t realize we need a major overhaul NOW we’re just gonna continue sinking w/o any realistic hope of rising again anytime soon.

Paul had an excellent year for the Clippers as the #2 option (and #3 on some nights) and his value is pretty high right now.

I disagree but goddamn do I hope that other teams’ FOs agree with you. George had that one game against OKC where he took over in the 4th and then…kinda just was ok? Like he was largely healthy which is a plus, but there were a lot of nights where the Clips just didn’t have their mojo for whatever reason (I’d argue because of weird locker room vibes and maybe a FO vs. Ty situation), and he couldn’t step up at all. George is a great front runner, but I don’t think he’s the type of player who can support the team and/or turn the tide when things are going poorly. Maybe in a few years I’ll look back fondly on the 213 era, but right now I really can’t picture that – salvaging some kind of value for George in a SnT would probably help me be a bit less bitter at how this has turned out.

Regarding the FO, one of the reasons I’m so close to despairing right now is because what evidence have we seen in the last 5 years that this FO will actually make smart, difficult decisions? The FO signed Ibaka because he was friends w/ Kawhi, Reggie and Russ because they were cheap and buddies w/ George, and traded for Norm because the guys the Clips sent out weren’t close to Norm’s caliber. The FO went w/ the “easy” decision to sign Wall because Ty, Kawhi, and George wanted him instead of the “hard” decision to spend on Hartenstein after one breakout year. They’ve largely drafted “ready to contribute now” guys in the draft – in other words “safe” picks – instead of taking chances on rawer, more athletically gifted players (outside of Keon Johnson, who has done absolutely nothing in the NBA). I agree w/ all of your suggestions, but I have less than zero faith that Frank will implement any of them.

To the extent that you ever see anything that any of us post here and/or have access to decision makers for your wolves, tell them they need to bench Gobert immediately or they are toast. It was that swarming defense in game two that Denver couldn’t cope with and having ogre Rudy on the floor in the drop ruins all of that. He cannot defend the perimeter or the midrange and is absolutely useless on offense too. He is the most overrated and overpaid player in history and has been played off the floor every playoffs he’s ever been in.

That game 2 defense was truly something to behold and they are just getting taken to the woodshed now with this flat-footed approach.

The Clips haven’t been the rock the boat types but they clearly do not want to pay PG the max. Now, I would do so in order to set up a sign and trade, and I do think Paul had an excellent year for the Clippers as the #2 option (and #3 on some nights) and his value is pretty high right now.

But what will make me impressed is if the F.O. gets rid of Russ, Plumlee, Tucker, and sells Norm while his value is high and uses that free space to promote younger players, fill the yawning void at the PF, backup C, and get younger.
