We have 1 open roster spot + Fi’s spot, and with Fi’s deal off our books via trade we’d have money to fill both of them.

I like Oturu, Coffey, and Scrubb just fine but I don’t think any of them are getting to “I trust them in the playoffs” this year.

Or Lou + Fi + 2nds for tucker and cousins?

I am also currently favouring Oturu over Fi so I wouldn’t mind loosing him but I wouldn’t want to loose more players.

As for:

“I do not feel as good about our injury insurance at the wing, forward, and big spots if one of PG/Kawhi/Batum/Morris or Ibaka/Zubac are out.”

There are a couple of things we can do straight away:

1) Give Oturu some regular minutes (~10).
2) Increase time for Coffey, not just in garbage minutes. Or if Scrubb is half-decent (give him the time) – I hear that he is shooting in practice, is that true?

I probably sit in a middle ground of thinking that the bench to start the year was an issue, even beyond the Dallas game (dudes not playing well individually + the lineups not working whenever we went away from the starting group). However, that doesn’t mean radical overreactions or big roster moves. I feel really good about our 9-man rotation now. If we are missing Pat, Lou, or Luke, I feel good about Reggie as our depth guard–not that he’s my favorite player in the world, but he’s done well individually this season and not many teams have better injury insurance. I do not feel as good about our injury insurance at the wing, forward, and big spots if one of PG/Kawhi/Batum/Morris or Ibaka/Zubac are out.

Let’s say we can trade Fi + Cash + 2nd somewhere for nothing to clear some hard cap space. It’s way too early to know who is going to be available during buyout season this year, so we’ll have to wait and see. But Osamu suggested candidates in the other thread, including Trevor Ariza and Robin Lopez. If we can get Trevor Ariza as our emergency 3/D for injury insurance or situational use (super small opponents, foul trouble, etc) and Robin Lopez as our emergency big for the same purposes (think our Christmas game vs Denver when Ibaka and Zu both picked up a couple early fouls), we’ll be golden

Since Morris’ return, and despite other individual absences, lineups have been more balanced and plus-minus stats in favour of most bench players.

Have a look at these plus-minus totals (all games, without Dallas loss, last four games):

Bev: (87,100, 13)
PG: (106, 128, 46)
Kawhi: (118, 118, 57)
Batum: (98, 115, 27)
Ibaka: (73, 87, 18)

Lou: (10, 34, 20)
Kennard: (-12, 17, 45)
Zu: (-14, 19, 14)
Morris: (14, 14, 45)
Reggie: (-2, 19, 31)
Mann: (-35, -6, 23)
2Pat: (-5, 21, 21)
Fi: (-1, 4. 14)
Oturu: (7, 11, 14)
Coffey: (-8, 0, 7)

I think everyone can spot the trends and the devastating impact of that loss to our stats.

This year, I feel like they really don’t need one to get good shots. Maybe it really helps to have a guy like Batum in the lineup which will keep the ball moving, and Kennard on the bench as a secondary playmaker, but even without Lou, this team seems like they’re able to get into their sets, and generate great looks.

Even more impressive, is it’s not like they’re relying at all on pushing the pace to generate open looks. They’re doing all of this operating as a very slow half court offense against set defenses.

More ball movement, less reliance on the pick and roll.

While I love this adjustment as a whole, I do wish they’d run more PnR when Zu is in there.

Definitely curious how much their offense or defensive strategies have permeated the Clips playbook.
