He just looks like a guy with a lot of potential. I can see him having success in the G and then making an appearance with the big boys when the time’s right — and I’m talkin THIS season. It’s funny how we all spend so much time on the end of the bench guys when we really know they stand not much of a chance at helping us out now. Nature of fandom I guess.

I know it’s only been 2 summer league games but I like the pick

W/ a 20-player cap on training camp and 14 vets + Moose + Moses, I’m not even sure that I’d be bringing Scrubb. I can buy Moon as a 4th PG for scrimmaging and such, but I still think we need a vet C to compete with Moses and I’d rather see multiple guys off this SL squad (Perry, Brantley, Reynolds) over Scrubb before you even remember that we can sign guys off other SL squads or FA vets to come to camp.

If you want 4 balanced 5-man units for camp scrimmages, assuming all 3 exhibit 10 guys are cut (ignore who is on what string, the point is just positions):
1: Reggie, PG, Kawhi, Morris, Zu
2: Wall, Norm, Terance, Nico, RoCo
3: Preston, Luke, Amir, ____, Brown
4: Moon, Scrubb, Boston, ____, Diabate

It’s pretty clear that we need some big men in, which also works because while the second two-way might be up for grab for any position, the 15th roster spot is going to go to a C, and honestly I’d argue that a forward to understudy Morris/Nico/RoCo should be the second two-way.

I’d like to get another C, let Diabate play 4 and 5 in camp, not bring Scrubb, and grab two guys who can play the 4 (or 3/4). Like, bump Diabate to 3rd string PF, let (for example) Reynolds or Brantley be the SF and the other or Perry be the PF, and Perry or another vet be the C, etc etc. Scrubb feels like he has no path to utility on this team.

The last time I was excited about a homegrown Clips big man was Blake. Seriously, our recent big men draft picks have been Branden Dawson, Diamond Stone, Fi, and Oturu – that is a depressing as hell list. I’m obviously not ready to anoint Moose as the full-time backup C (among other things, he needs to stop jumping on pump fakes outside the paint), but I think he at least has the athleticism and some skills that will translate at the NBA level. He at least seems like he could be a good emergency PF/C and 5mpg kinda guy.

Boston’s extra bulk is noticeable, and although he wasn’t hyper efficient, I was actually encouraged by that stretch in the 3rd where he just went full Kobe-mode and took it to the hoop every time down the floor. I know that ain’t gonna fly in the regular season, but that’s what SL is for.

I’m reasonably encouraged by Preston too. His floater game looks like it’s coming along nicely, and that shot is gonna be absolutely crucial if he’s gonna stick in the league since he doesn’t have the athleticism to consistently get by guys. My biggest concern with him is his assertiveness – I don’t want him to monopolize the ball, but these two games he’s vanished altogether in the 2nd half. He’s gonna need to maintain his aggressiveness going forward.

Scrubb does not look ready for a regular roster spot. I know Coffey looked pretty bad last year in SL and he turned out great, but that doesn’t mean that my concerns aren’t warranted. As Lucas pointed out, Scrubb was forcing it and getting bailed out on a lot of drives by the refs. Between subpar SL play and a positional logjam, I don’t see any way he makes the Clips roster this season if he’s unwilling to take a two-way deal. Frankly, even if he were willing to take another two-way, at this point I may be more interested in seeing what the other dudes on the SL roster can do.
