I remember the team was consumed with the story. I remember Doc practically crying. I remember him giving the team a day off, as if there was a death in the family, so they could hang out all day and stew on the matter while watching news updates. There was even conversation about not playing. Sure we won the first series, but I believe we could have won it all. I believe the team was distracted by the Sterling story and Doc didn’t actively do enough to prevent that. That is my belief. While you can disagree, unless you were in the locker room, you have no more first-hand knowledge then I do, so to say my take is “just wrong” is just your opinion. I do understand that I MAY be wrong, but I’ll go with my gut, unless I see actual evidence otherwise.

How did we mope around? We closed out the up and coming Dubs and if wasn’t for CP’s personal meltdown, we would’ve been in the WCF. That year was hardly on Doc. This take is just wrong.

With all due respect, just because Doc was empathetic and understanding of the personal trauma the players were going through as a result of Sterling, doesn’t mean he was a good leader. I would say he was more of a counselor. And while that’s great, that’s not leadership. He was being paid to coach the team to a championship and they failed. We had a legit shot to win it all that season, and Doc just let everyone mope around. A good leader would have made it clear that they were not to let a POS like Sterling ruin their best shot a championship. A good leader would have helped them compartmentalize their difficulties, not absorb them, and allow them consume them. Basketball, the game itself, was their salvation from the Sterling BS, but he didn’t play it that way.

Doc was not a horrible coach, nor was he a great coach. He could not help the team overcome adversity at the most important moments. He looked just as afraid as the players did. I for one am happy he is gone.

Ron, I mean, SVG, feels kinda like a retread despite his Orlando success. Detroit was 1/3 his pro coaching career and can’t be ignored.

Haven’t heard this thrown out, but the guest on Jovan’s podcast threw out Stan Van Gundy as a name that would be a possible candidate. I’m actually Ok with SVG as he is a more modern coach and embraced the 4-out team in Orlando. I more or less ignore his time in Detroit because he had a really flawed roster and was also doing the dual GM/Coach duties.
