The NBA has to determine his risk of exposure, which will result in them deciding whether he needs a 4, 10, or 14 day quarantine before he can re-enter the bubble. So, if he faces the longer quarantine, it won’t be a suspension or fine (though you’ll see some dishonest outlets claiming “Williams was suspended 2 games for leaving the bubble to go to a strip club”), just the correct level of precaution to take for the risk he was exposed while outside the bubble. That’s the investigation.

The half full view is it’s better to have these guys leave during “preseason” than it does the playoffs, assuming we and the league get that far. The return quarantine protocal seems pretty effective against preventing a returning player from infecting others but nothing is guaranteed these days.

Yeah things have worked out pretty well so far, but all it takes is one false negative to wreck havoc. Or, as you said, a single key player needing to leave the bubble and creating a huge asterisk on the outcome.

I remain skeptical, but things have been smooth enough the first few weeks.

It was great to see NBA basketball again after so long. Having all these guys unable to practice and play with the team is not ideal, to put it mildly. But PG looked really good, and something tells me Kawhi will do special Kawhi things when the games matter. And the new 213 Hoops looks and works great.

So this is what I was afraid of. I have had this gnawing feeling that the bubble restart is going to fail. All it takes is a couple of big names to get sick or miss a bunch of games for this thing to really get a big asterisk on it. I’m not talking about Lebron or Giannis, but if the second best player on a couple of teams are affected (Middleton, Gobert, Tatum/Walker, Lowry) then that team slips to lower in the pack and likely doesn’t fare well. And it’s not like an injury; those things happen, but COVID is something we knew might impact the game. Then many will doubt the legitimacy of this O’Brien trophy.

And with so many players leaving the bubble, someone may get an infection. They’ll be held out of the game for some time, from 4-14 days or maybe more and that could change the whole complexion of the tournament. Heaven help the team that has four rotation players in the potentially risky situation … oops, that’s our team.

Sorry I’m in a dark mood. It’s national tequila day and that is not helping.
