The Lakers essentially signed a bunch of guys to one year contracts to be able to keep that flexibility. Rondo, Lance Stephenson, Michael Beasley, etc. They had their eyes on last summer’s free agent class with their flexibility. I don’t think the issue was necessarily IF the Lakers could open up their cap flexibility for three max contracts, but IF the Lakers were able to sign max guys because at that point, all they had to sell was “come play with LeBron and play for the legendary Laker brand.” The Lakers underestimated the desire of some guys. I think a lot of guys in the league would rather beat LeBron than team up with him and also looking at that Laker roster, between the Clippers, Nets, and Heat, the Lakers easily had the worst roster makeup. Kyrie and KD, I think already had their sights set on the Nets for a while. I think Jimmy Butler saw that the Clippers didn’t have the cap space to sign him and he was not who Kawhi wanted to play with. I think Butler also didn’t like the glitz of the Lakers in Hollywood so that’s why he chose the Heat.

With that being said, I would love to be able to trade Trez if we are able to sign him for $15 to $20M with his Bird Rights, though I wonder how close we would be at the cap. If anything, I think UFAs will receive lower salaries next year because of the pandemic and the salary cap being lowered due to lower revenue.

Excellent in that it was very closely contested (eventually). Hideous though in terms of quality of offense. That was some UGLY basketball in the 2nd half, man.

Missed Denver-Utah. It sounds like it was a great game. Excellent analysis Sanjesh, your contributions to this site are valuable. And I appreciate the informed comments by all. This foray by the Clippers toward their first shot at a title, under these conditions, is a wild ride. I didn’t have a strong preference regarding which team we faced in the next round as I was pretty confident the Clips could take either. And Zu is so good and still just a kid.
