Masai Ujiri has a reputation for playing hardball. That said, FVV is out hard balling him at the moment. FVV has a player option which he will decline and he very bluntly says that he has outperformed his current contract and is looking for more. He saw what Brunson got last year from the Knicks (about 25M/yr for 4 years) and he thinks that’s the new floor and he expects to get 30M in the market. Ujiri can either let him walk or trade for assets, as it doesn’t seem like Toronto wants to sign him for another 4 year deal at 30M/yr. If they were, they’d just lock up FVV now. It could happen by next week, but that’s not where the vibes are on this at the moment. In that scenario, Toronto may be inclined to move FVV and might lower their asking price because the Clippers don’t strike me as a team that will give up valued assets for a rental.

Getting FVV, who Kawhi would like, without blowing up the roster too much would be great. That doesn’t seem possible of course, but maybe the FO could finagle something acceptable.

I think that’s partly why Reggie got moved to the 2nd unit. PG takes the ball from him too much and he does so with Mann too. Neither has the stature to say ‘it’s my ball, get your behind to the elbow, high post, or get down to the baseline for the pin down screen and I’ll feed it to you on the move’. Van Vleet has that kind of stature and Kawhi would endorse him.

Clippers get a close to ideal set of results from tonight’s contests. GSW loses to Minnesota in OT, and Phx is getting clobbered by ATL. That gives the Clips a 1.5 game lead on both GSW and Phx. A win tomorrow vs Milwaukee could be pretty significant, as it would give the Clips a 2 game lead on GSW/Phx and bring them to within 1 game of SAC. Beating a team like Milwaukee would also send a message to the league that the Clips aren’t going to be ‘catchable’ by the teams below them.

Memphis also lost to Portland, which brings them a tad closer to the pack.

In trade deadline watch, FVV had a triple double tonight, 34-12-10 in a 3 pt loss to Utah. Conley had a cool 19/8. The FVV numbers are eye catching. I think Kawhi wants his guy.

Naz Reid also had a monster game w/24 and 13. He was a bit shot happy, and he plays with a bit too much finesse defensively and facing the basket (unless he’s got a clear lane to dunk) but he put up the numbers that Minnesota needed. I was also impressed with Kyle Anderson. I’ve always liked him since his UCLA days, but he’s really emerged as a Batum like glue guy. He was probably the most important player for Minny in the last 2 mins and OT. I just don’t see Minnesota trading him or Russell with that team appearing to have turned a corner.

Had a thought while watching this TWolves-Warriors game – I really don’t understand why Minnesota has been trying to trade Naz Reid and DLo, but given how well they’ve been playing lately I kinda doubt they’re gonna give either of them away for scraps.

That’s kind of my point. I would love it if Kawhi and PG13 (and everyone really) ran off ball actions and we had a heavy ball movement type of offense, but we just aren’t that kind of team. So given that a lot of the offense is isos that rely on Kawhi and PG13 just beating their guys and/or passing to the right guys out of a double team, we don’t really need a top-flight PG to run that offense. Like what, do we think that adding FVV is all of a sudden gonna transform the offensive scheme overnight?

For last night? Absofuckinglutely am I criticizing Ty and the coaching staff for forcefeeding Reggie minutes late in that game. I wish Reggie would’ve used his head a bit more, but at the end of the day it’s on the coaches to notice when the players don’t have it (and I think I remember seeing Reggie was recovering from a sickness or something) and put the guys in best position to succeed, and that didn’t happen last night regardless of the outcome.
