I don’t really think it’s about physicality for trez but more that the guy is lacking in basic BBIQ. Doesn’t really have much of a feel for playing D vs. skilled starters which requires a degree of discipline. Trez is not showing much of that right now.

Have to throw in a PG comment. Hated his 4 TOs as he looked out of control a lot of the time. I love it when they find him in the corner as I’m supremely confident in that shot. But, in the open court I’m absolutely terrified as PG aint a willing passer.

Last: kudos to you Lucas. These types of reviews (after a frustrating loss) have to be the hardest to figure out and write.

We would get those really long stretches (4-5 minutes 7-9 possessions) where Denver wasn’t able to score and yet we’d only cut into the lead by 3-5 points during that time because we were making stupid turnovers, or taking contested ISO’s and missing, or missing easy layups. Other than that ridiculous 44 point 1st quarter Our defense was more than solid enough to win but our offense was just beyond miserable all game. For some reason we were unable to make any in game adjustments to the pressure Denver was bringing at Kawhi. Not sure why Doc is never able to adjust in game.

Not sure if it was Clippers poor play offensively or Nuggets really playing solid D. Defensively in the 2nd half we would make them go 7 – 9 possessions with no points. I think we did that twice. Normally, a 10 – 15 point lead would be evaporated and we would have an even game going into the last minute. Our offense was just so iso bad and we couldn’t hit free throws. That was a classic game for Lou to pull out for us.

My feeling is that this team needs to learn to win when Kawhi is having a night off. I have seen comments already that Kawhi cannot have games with 4 on 17 shooting. He can and he will. It’s a mortal side of any superstar. It’s easy to get spoiled while your leaser has 7 consecutive playoffs games with 29 and more. But even “Mr.Realiable” will struggle every now and then. You rather not take it for granted. What makes championship teams is other players stepping up in those rare situations. It was Scottie for Jordan, it was Gasol and Artest while Kobe was 6 of 24 in game 7 of the 2009 finals. The success of Toronto last year was not solely on Kawhi, as there were many other players not afraid of the moment (Lowry, Ibaka, Gasol, Siakam, Van Vleet, Green). Kawhi is the only player on our roster with championship experience. He will be fine and will keep carrying us, but I hope this loss will be a wake up call for others to understand that there are nights they need to step up.

He was almost single handedly responsible for the series against the Mavs being a 6 game affair vs. a sweep. And now against Denver he continues to be a train wreck defensively whenever he’s on the floor, and he’s not making up for it at all on offense so just a net negative liability (I like Lucas’s 4 on 5 analogy because that’s really what it looks like. Trez has always been a poor defender but it didn’t matter as much during the regular season when he was playing against weaker 2nd units, and also he was scoring points when our stars were keeping their minutes down. Now with one of PG13 or Kawhi always on the floor we don’t need Trez to score and even if we did his offense game has tanked after the layoff and I think the grandma thing also really messed up his head and he’s lost a lot of his aggression and fire. Whatever the reasons we just cannot afford to play him just to be nice or for nostalgia sake. If we want to win a chip he needs to be benched or played very small minutes until he can earn back the right to be on the court with better play.

However, playing favorites for a “6th man” regular season player ain’t gonna cut it in the playoffs. If he really is part of that dog pound (Bev, Mook), where’s they physicality especially on defense? Winning that award made him soft.

Some people who haven’t actually watched games and only watched Youtube highlights would disagree and say “Nah, Trez is the BEAST! He can score 20pts! 6MOTY!!”
His stats during regular-season looks good because they’ve sacrificed their possessions to let Trez play stupidly inefficient post-ups. He demands the ball but he usually can’t make those shots against great teams and even if he gets to the line he’s a poor FT shooter. Veryyyyy inefficient. They’ve been wasting so many possessions JUST TO MAKE TREZ HAPPY. I’m seriously tired of it.

Trez only plays to score. He doesn’t do the little things for the team. Only potential highlight plays get him motivated. I’m not saying he’z lazy. He plays hard and he gives them energy but he simply can’t do the little things which can help the team.
JaMychal, Patterson or even Noah can do those things for the team. They’re unselfish and make teammates better. Provides ball-movement, defense, hustle and hard screen.

At least, Doc realized a bit that he can’t play Trez much and gave JaMychal some more minutes. I was really encouraged. That’s a really wonderful bright side for this team.
