Also, Clips were very good, but we’re (arguably) always the 3rd best team in the West. There were always GSW, Durant’s Thunder, etc. Only two teams make the WCF and objectively there were always 2 other teams that deserved to be there as much as LAC.

In light of that you need to take a look at Doc’s failures and accomplishments in their context

Accomplishments:
1) Turning the Clippers into a legitimate and respected franchise – the FO and analytics department is one of the best in the league and free agents want to sign with the Clippers now.

2) Culture – making Clipper home games feel like it is a Clipper home game instead of the Clippers playing on someone else’s floor (i.e. covering up the Laker championship banners and retired jerseys)

3)Navigating the team and the non-basketball side of the organization through the Sterling fiasco and helping Ballmer get his feet wet when he bought the team during that transition.

4) Competitive play from the team in the 2 years after Lob City and before Kawhi/PG. We almost made the playoffs in year one because of the injuries from Blake and Bev before the trade for Tobias Harris and then in year 2, making the playoffs as a plucky 8th seed and taking two games off the Warriors at Oracle.

Failures:
1a) Losing the 3-1 lead to Denver in bubble playoffs – because of poor coaching decisions.

1b) Taking 6 games to beat Dallas in the first round of playoffs in bubble – game 4, letting Reggie get switched onto Luka instead of subbing him out for a bigger player and letting him hit that game winner wasted a 30+ point effort from the Underground GOAT despite PG playing like trash. Like 1a, poor coaching decisions and getting thoroughly out coached by Carlisle.

2) Poor drafting and not valuing draft picks/assets when he was coach and President of Basketball Ops

3) Not developing young players, and giving them consistent opportunities even though they have proven to be good and deserving (e.g. Reggie Bullock (solid role player after getting traded), Terance Mann, Landry Shamet, Zubac, etc.)

4) Never staggering stars and doing full lineup changes. This disrupts continuity and chemistry especially when players get hurt.

Others:
1) Losing to 3-1 lead to Rockets. Hard for me to blame Doc on this one because CP3 was gimpy with his hamstring after hitting the game 7 winner over Duncan in the first round against the Spurs. That year, the Clippers had the worst bench out of all the playoff teams. I thought the Clippers were better than the Rockets, but the fluky hot steak with Josh Smith and Cory Brewer lighting us up from 3 with Harden on the bench and the defense, I don’t remember being too terrible wasn’t the team’s fault. Game 7, they should have put up more fight but they were tired from the Spurs series especially because of their thin bench. Hard for me to blame Doc here as coach.

2) Losing to OKC on second round – that was the year of the Sterling fiasco and having beaten the Warriors in 7 and being emotionally drained, a ton of fluky stuff happened with the refs making terrible calls in games 5 and 6. CP3 making uncharacteristic fouls to Westbrook didn’t help matters. I give Doc a pass here.

3) Injuries. The rest of the playoff exits we had were due to injuries to Blake and/or CP3. Doc cannot be blamed for that.

Maybe one of the greatest starting lineups ever. And full failure.

Terrence Mann could be the greatest 2nd round pick since Ginobilli. Butler has been fantastic but this kid has more finesse.
