There are too many variables to make statements like this.

Good shot makers if left open, but we can guard either 1 v 1 with selective double teaming when it makes sense (and not Russ doubling off Kyrie to guard Luka)

I don’t think this Dallas team presents match ups that we can’t handle. We’ve manhandled them defensively for 2 games, holding them under 100 pts.

Our biggest challenge in winning this series is Ty Lue figuring out what combos will work. It has been a struggle for him the past 3 seasons despite figuring things out in the ’21 playoffs.

He’s going to have to make some clear moves here not just in terms of the personnel on the floor but what he demands of them from the sidelines when they’re on the floor. For example, can he yank Harden if he’s holding the ball too long? Can he implore PG to make better basketball plays and look for his shot? Can he shift quickly when a move he makes isn’t panning out. Can he read the game flow and play the hot hand?

They also missed a take foul on Luka. I don’t think it was as poorly reffed as Game 1, but the posture of the refs was more pivotal b/c this was a closer contest with lead changes and it was mostly targeted against one player: Zu. How Zu was reffed when he played D was way different than when he was on the offensive side of the ball. The replay refs reversing the and one on Kyrie’s foul on Kawhi was also weird. He hit the elbow. Ty Lue is never one to work the refs in the press room or on the court that much, but I wish he would take a page from Phil Jackson and work them hard because the refs have been wearing Mavs colors in these first 2 games.

I know the spots Kawhi will work on in the next few days. But the rest of his game was xlnt.

Just gotta hope that this game action DID NOT CAUSE UNDUE INFLAMMATION. If he’s good to go forward, that development trumps this L.

Zu had a very pedestrian came–basically came down to earth. Have to say Dallas was very aggressive with him and he fumbled/wilted a bit too much. I think he’ll (and the team) adjust. Get him going early and keep him out of foul trouble should be key.

And we didn’t defend with the intensity of game 1 — gotta find that gear on the road. I think we will.

This game was tough to watch–too much chucking and hero ball vs. Mavs clutch shot making and sharing the ball. Watch the film Clips and get better. All in all, sorta happy we got one at this point.

Kawhi will be better ramped up near 100% and we will be able to do a lot of the things that have worked so far. Problem is they have found some things that worked well tonight and we’re headed to Dallas. Not sure how we get better looks from three. They defended us well. We were able to jump on them in game 1 but we needed to get this one somehow. Objectively speaking it’s advantage Dallas now big time. I can’t fathom how badly Luke and Kyrie are going to torch us in their gym–not to mention their others. If we’re going to win one there it will be Friday. If we come back here down 3-1 for game five they will probably gut that one out like tonight’s game. Here’s hoping we break through Friday and reverse our fortunes. Luka is the greatest combination of passing and scoring ever by a mile.

If Norm Powell is on the floor, he needs to get shots or he needs to get off the floor. If James Harden is on the floor, he needs to make quicker decisions and reads or get off the floor. If PG is on the floor, he shouldn’t be taking only 14 shots. If Mann and Coffey are contributing and are effective, you play them.

Basically, we settled for a lot of iso ball and contested shots tonight (a constant refrain this season).

I don’t like this loss b/c our offensive process was not good; our lineup selections were not good in Q4; and we didn’t optimize the guys we had on the floor to put them in a position to succeed (Kawhi included given his limitations owing to rust. Like, why the heck is that dude taking 5 3s when he clearly has no legs for it. Give those shots to PG/Norm. Throw it into the post).

If our offensive process gets fixed in these 3 days then I think we’ll win at least 1 game if not 2. If it’s not fixed, we’ll be down 3-1.

One thing I’ll say about Dallas: I don’t think Luka and Kyrie are the offensive juggernauts that their reps suggest, but they have gelled well enough to make the extra pass and use the role players they have on the floor. If they keep doing that, they’ll beat us if our offensive process is stuck in the mud like it was tonight.

I’ll give them credit for moving the ball well. Neither shot the ball well. They had a decided advantage going into this game with a rusty Kawhi, but needed Maxi Kleber and PJ Washington making shots to bail them out. They were better than Harden/PG. Their defense was more about us not taking advantage of them the way we should have.

Another one: we were more concerned with keeping turnovers low than with running quality offense. I would like to see that Dallas defense tested when the ball moves more and earlier, they gotta make the right rotations AND they gotta keep Zu, Mann and Russ off the boards. It’s a strength we could use a lot more but in order to do so we gotta be willing to play a lot quicker, decisive, trusting every player on the court and hit the offensive glass aggressively
