DJJr: upgraded to ?able vs Dallas—that’s 50/50 in my book

If the real KL appears and we get Mann and DJJ back and IF we are done with the KPJ experiment, then we’d be a very interesting team. I know JMac wants a big — and I’ve always liked Tobias — but with the guys we have, assuming their good versions, then we can make it interesting.

Without these guys, it’s gonna be a rough watch vs. xlnt teams (as Rob has opined). Hopefully we will not dig ourselves into a hole that’s too damn deep to crawl out of.

But I don’t believe there’s a market for more than probably three of these players—which means the others might be had for a bargain (NO 1st rounders). Other than Kuzma, none are more than a 1 or 2 year deal which means books would still be clear for the 2026 summer plans.

Kuzma (would require the biggest package. 3 years and probably a 1st rounder. Next)
Collins (second biggest package. Maybe a 1st rounder. If so, next)
Olynyk (a decent young player and filler might do it)
DFS (probably very little)
Nance (probably very little)

And my favorite fit…TOBIAS (at 32 is not part of Pistons future plans and there might not be major competition for him. Some combination of PJ, Bones, KPJ, Amir or DJJ might get this done).

Tobias, Zu, Kawhi, Harden and Norm has size, strength, rebounding, interior defense, outside shooting and several shot creators. As long as we keep one of Amir or DJJ we could still round things out with Mann, Dunn, Nico, Miller and Bamba as needed. Then look to sign a buyout or some other vet FA point guard after converting Miller.

Per usual it’s difficult to post these type of ideas without there being holes in them. But I do believe there’s a move we can make that can improve our lot with little risk.

Bigger and Stronger. Exhibit A on why many of us are clamoring for some more size up front to help Zu. DJJ can be as frisky as he wants and chase these kids around but they will still find slivers of light to exploit at that type of game. Gotta muscle em. I want Zu, Kawhi and 6’9″+ up front. This is especially important for us given the pace we are going to be playing at with Harden running the show. Dominate the paint on both ends.

Probably best to break it down to Good KPJ and Horrible/Unbearable KPJ, and just hope that we get at least a healthy dose of the former. But it’s hard to come up with any legitimate elements or attributes of Good KPJ. Some athleticism and defensive ability, an oddly effective handle around the free throw line and the ability to get and hit a soft shot in the paint, and that’s it. The whole thing is a head-scratcher. Are there elements of a better, effective player there somewhere, some one who can help the team and play a genuine constructive role? We’re 479 minutes into the KPJ experiment at this point, a hearty 20 mpg. Occasionally there’s are flashes of something, but it’s hard to say what it is. What’s the goal, if he stays in the rotation like this and keeps getting all of these touches and minutes, and somehow improves? Does anyone have an idea of what that player would be?

If Bones was just a tiny bit better at a few things, and slightly bigger and stronger I guess, it would be a complete no-brainer. One issue is that Bones has his own patches of ineptitude and poor focus, and he’s more of a magnet for attention from the offense. But KPJ’s miscues and misses and poor plays and lapses are legion at this point, his leash seems endless, and Bones’ has an extra short leash and gets extremely limited opportunities, with only brief moments to shine. If Bones had those 479 minutes, rather than his meagre 137? For one thing you can assume he’d be close to Harden and Powell’s team-leading 77 3’s, and above the next player, Amir at 44 (in 639 minutes). Bones has 23 now, a gaudy 6.0 per 36 mins. That stat does seem to jump out, doesn’t it?

I want my team to be great so was holding out hope he could help us. That was just horrendous last night with no excuses.

He had several unforced turnovers against the worst defense in the league. What’s deceiving about him is it’s easy to mistake athletic ability for talent. He has very little talent but a lot of athletic ability which is flashy. He has the tools to be a player more like Dunn rather than one like Harden and might be able to carve a niche out for himself as a defense/rebounding guy who can still score if the play breaks down. He should focus on those things. I really don’t want to see him play anymore. Bones is far further along and developed.

Just what the Clippers needed. A bunch of guys finding their shooting touch back home. Kind of funny seeing Norm shake the rust off and hit his first shots, but then Harden raising the bar. Still so impressed by what Harden brings to the non-Kawhi lineup, and the consistency of it. Eager to see the next step, but I fear we might struggle with two games down in Dallas. Not having the DJJ and TMann combo for these games really hurts.

Bigger ?s now are 1) Kawhi and 2) DJJ. Need both those guys to compete with Dallas. Any intel out there on either guy?
