Not a great effort except for 213, especially the magnificent Paul George. Coffey once again outplayed shrinking violet Mann. The backbenchers were garbage in garbage time. Seeing Luke play well was nice. It’s another in the win column, which is what matters.

Once you eliminate the ‘4-star lineup’, that narrative doesn’t hold true. Among second units, this is what actually does and doesn’t work:

1) The current standard rotation with Russ that includes the problematic 3-man combo of Russ-Norm-Coffey: -3.1 per 100 in 29 minutes. And that’s on hot 3-point shooting with very low turnovers. Imagine what happens when that reverts to the mean or Ty throws it out in the playoffs…

2) Same unit with PG instead of Kawhi: +1.0 per 100 in 28.5 minutes. Also good shooting but low volume. Both units got big rebounding issues.

3) Harden-Russ-Norm-Kobe-Theis: +33.3 per 100 – over a larger sample size of 34 minutes. Still hot shooting but better on the defensive glass.

4) Same as 3) but Kawhi for Kobe: +9.7 per 100 in 39 minutes. No hot shooting, better defense and this unit gets to the free throw line more than opponents.

There are others that are all better than the current bench unit we throw out there with Russ, even one with PJ that has played more minutes is +34.

Two questions: which of these units makes more sense? More importantly, which of these units would you be comfortable with in the playoffs? The one with the least talents, the worst results, the most vulnerable defense and the biggest shooting outlier or an alternative? When we start looking at facts, this shouldn’t even be a question

Good offensive half after a slow start. Defensively, we’re having too many breakdowns giving up open 3s but overall, it’s okay. Transition defense is there, close to no points off turnovers. Boxing out and reasonable effort.

Theis and Coffey stood out to me (relative to expectations). PG with a lot of good and some bad.

Clippers made a defensive stand on what I believe was the Grizzlies 2nd to last possession that was absolutely all world. If they can capture that in a bottle we may just go all the way.

One thing about this Grizzlies team is they understand that whether or not they win the game that every possession is a learning experience to improve and bank for the future. I wish we took things as seriously but we seem to when we need to.

Apparently Embiid is dealing w/ a knee injury and/or swelling, and it’s the same issue he had last year in the playoffs (Shelburne reported on it). So unfortunately I’m guessing the Kings stomp the Sixers.
