Comments on: Clippers vs Grizzlies Preview – And Thoughts on Chris Paul https://213hoops.com/clippers-vs-grizzlies-preview-and-thoughts-on-chris-paul/ L.A. Clippers News and Analysis Sun, 07 Dec 2025 12:45:12 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.3.20 By: Dave Rosa https://213hoops.com/clippers-vs-grizzlies-preview-and-thoughts-on-chris-paul/#comment-66947 Sun, 07 Dec 2025 12:45:12 +0000 https://213hoops.com/?p=21364#comment-66947 I’m writing this after the Minnesota loss. Turnovers and poor shot selection (mainly from Harden and No-Show Leonard) in the 4th quarter is a common theme.

I agree that Zu should be the focus of the offense. Good things usually happen when the Clippers feed Zu. This will never happen as long as Harden and No Show are with the Clippers. Harden and Leonard will never allow Zu to be the hub. Their egos will never allow it, although it would enhance their games.

Don’t ever, ever, ever, allow Lopez to play in any games unless there are injuries. Just stop doing it.

Kris Dunn should never shoot another 4th quarter 3.

Kobe Sanders can play. Play Cam and Brown more. Play RayJ Dennis a little bit.

The Clippers need to get younger and quicker to stay relevant.

I read that CP3 was telling players not to follow Van Gundy’s defensive directions. WTF does he think he is? CP3 was signed to a minimum contract. He was an end of the bench fill in. He wasn’t a coach. The mistake was signing him. CP3 wasn’t a team player. He is an old guy who is coming to grips with the fact that he is no longer the young player who occupies his mind. He tried a power play move and got slapped down hard. That’s it.

I’m an old guy who has been with the Clippers from the time they arrived at the Sports Arena. I live in Florida and stay up late watching them. The CP3 thing doesn’t faze me in the slightest. To me, it’s no big deal. I love players as long as they can produce. If they can’t, I thank them for their service and wish them well.

The rebuild will happen due to expiring contracts. Players will come to the Clippers. They have the Intuit Dome, LA, and they will have the $$$$$. “Show me the $$$$.”

And there is always an owner who will overpay for a player if they believe a player is the difference between a championship and coming in 2nd.

I actually thought the team we had before the midseason trades was better built for the playoffs than the one we ended up with in the 2nd half of the season. I do think if we had kept Mann and KPJ and just picked up Ben Simmons we would’ve beaten Denver and gone 6 games with OKC. Actually, had we not made those trades, we would’ve been in the other bracket (away from OKC/Denver) and could’ve had a run like Minnesota to the conference finals. The transition period of getting Kawhi up to speed, plus Bogi integrated into the team plus Norm back from injury is where we lost ground and had to go on a big run at the end just to avoid the play in. If we don’t make those moves, we probably hold steady and get that #3 seed instead of the dreaded 4/5 bracket.

It was OK with PG13 pre-Brian Shaw, but after getting Brian Shaw and losing PG13, the offense has only gotten worse. There’s no off-ball action. The Clippers playbook is Harden/Kawhi ISO with everyone standing around, Zu hand-off to Harden/Kawhi at the 3pt line, Harden/Zu PnR while everyone stands around, very rare feed Zu in the post. The Clippers don’t even properly run the all-to-common Spain PnR like they did in the PG13 days. I saw it ONCE last night with KRIS DUNN as the 2nd screener popping out. Of course no one chases to cover Dunn and it clogs the paint.

But in terms of fanhood, there’s a big difference between “fresh faced elementary/middle school kid looking for fun, local-ish team to root for, even if they’re bad” and “middle aged dude who lived through all that bad, learned what good actually felt like, only to see ownership/FO blindly stumble into bad again.”

Of course, given the FO’s past history (read: Blake Griffin), that doesn’t mean Lue won’t be fired regardless.

Well, no, that treatment is only reserved for people who actually give a shit about the franchise and are liked by fans. Meanwhile there’s a near-endless leash for Doc, Frank, Lue, Kawhi, etc.

The latter, even w/ a positive result, is less reliable at those guys’ ages, wears them down, and means everyone else on the court will just stand around doing nothing.

A lot of us have already been ripping this team for years over how poorly it’s been run, even before the 213 disaster, but Ballmer ignores our frustration and keeps shoving this garbage product down our throats undaunted.

I’m finding it increasingly difficult to see how Ballmer ever gets the message on how sick of this we are without us as fans simply walking away and refusing to waste any more money and time on this team. What else can we do when Ballmer has built a cult-like bubble of toxic positivity around the franchise that’s seemingly impervious to reality and runs off anyone (like CP3) with a different opinion?

Frank had made it obvious how desperate he was through the playoffs and all offseason up to that point, making him an easy mark to get fleeced. He then whiffed on all the other available free agent stars besides Kawhi, increasing the desperation to get a co-star. And then he didn’t even pretend to negotiate with OKC before handing them everything they wanted.

We are where we are today because Frank couldn’t sell Kawhi on patience, couldn’t sell Jimmy or KD on signing here, and couldn’t even convince OKC to let him have some protections on those draft picks. It was utterly disastrous fear-based GMing at every turn.

If Frank does get his extension, part of the blame is on this fanbase’s years of excuses for why the PG trade shouldn’t count against him. “Every team would have done it!” No, a competent organization would have never allowed itself to be backed that far into the corner. It took a string of cascading failures by Frank, arguably beginning with the choice to draft Jerome over MPJ, to arrive at that trade, which would have cost him his job years ago at any serious franchise that cares about winning.

Front office is going to have to be candid and realistic about where the team is with Ballmer and make smart decisions. By the time DJJ and Bogi get back into the rotation we’ll be 15-16 games under .500. There’s no coming back from that this season, sorry.
