– LAC was 8-7 w/o Kawhi last year. 3 losses (Utah, Milwaukee, Atlanta) and 1 win (the finale against OKC, who also rested guys) came without PG. So while last year’s team was different from this year’s team, LAC was 7-4 in games where Kawhi was out but PG played as a solo star. The 7 wins were against ATL, OKC, MEM, IND, NYK, CLE, POR, so I wouldn’t project a 64% win percentage over a full season with better teams in the scheduling mix, but the Kawhi-less Clippers were far from dreadful last year.

– The absence of Kawhi obviously leaves a 30+ minute void in the forward rotation and a 25+ point void in the offense. Assuming Paul George’s minutes and scoring levels are mostly at capacity even when Kawhi does play, the main player who is set up to move from like 28 minutes and 12 points to 36 minutes and 20 points (with more shots/touches) is Marcus Morris. Having him be out when Kawhi is out compounds the issue. Last year Lou/Trez boosted the offense when shorthanded, so imagine we were missing Trez and Kawhi. That would have been a lot on Lou and PG’s shoulders.

But it’s fair to ask how good is this team when KL doesn’t play. I’d venture to say not that great but the same could be said for any NBA team missing their best player. Then again, this may be an argument for having a starless team where the next guy steps up and approximates the missing B player’s production. Here, no one can approximate KLs production. He’s that good. As far as the Mavs, they didn’t have Porzingis but Zinger is a far less crucial piece than KL.

As I was listening to the post game 570 excuses, AA blamed it on the matinee scheduling (as if the opponent drawing the same time shouldn’t be considered) rather than asking the simple question: How much does this team depend on their best player? Answer: plenty.

Steamroll losses happen in B ball. Recall the 1985 Memorial Day Massacre where Magic and Kareem lost by about 40 to the Celtics (a finals game). As I recall,the Lakes bounced back nicely (and they weren’t missing anyone).

I just don’t feel like these guys need to be defended. That denver series wasn’t long enough ago to disconnect it from this loss for me. The team definitely needs to move on from this. I can move on too, just like i did from the denver series. This team doesn’t suck.
