I think he has the ability to reign himself in when he needs to. I think in the regular season he likes to do heat checks to see if he can go off. As a Russ fan, this may just be some wishful thinking on my end, but he really was good against Phoenix last year and he’s proven that he can somewhat modify his game to fit the needs of the team.

Anybody else is just having a good season.

And really, one could reasonably cut the list down to one – Jokic. He is leading the league in WS/48 and leading the league by a country mile in VORP as well as BPM.

Knicks were 13-2 this month and he’s been sensational as a team leader, shot maker at high volume and strong percentage and overall winner. He’s right there with SGA and he’s the best tough shot taker/maker of the entire group of candidates. If Embiid is out of the convo, you really only have Jokic, SGA, Luka and Giannis who are in the mix. I don’t think this is a MVP season for Giannis. Milwaukee isn’t dominant and they had a coaching change. If the Knicks finish off this regular season strong and end up in the #3 or #2 spot, I’d elevate him above SGA, Giannis and Luka and then it’s a contest between him and Jokic. I’d be inclined to vote for him over the Joker if he stays at this level for the remainder of the regular season.

It provides rest for our best player though, has been better than several other Russ/Harden lineups and leaves room for a second bench unit without Harden that could be much stronger than what we roll out now (e.g. Russ/Norm/any of Mann/Coffey/PG and then Kawhi and a center or going small ball with Kawhi at center).

I think that kind of staggering between Kawhi and Harden leads to even better results. It also fixes another issue: the Russ/Norm/Amir/Kawhi/Theis lineup (+4.3 per 100) hasn’t been very good, it depends on Kawhi playing and it has mostly survived on Kawhi being extraordinary (read: isn’t that sustainable and doesn’t have too much room for improvement). The Kobe lineup would cure that.

One correction: I read the wrong column, the Kobe lineup is +33.3 per 100, not +15.9.

But yeah, I hate Ty’s tendency putting natural shooting guards at PFs enough as it is, let alone next to a 6’8″ C.

Hard for me to say Kobe should be getting any of Amir’s minutes right now but I’d at least try to keep one of Kawhi/Mason on the floor with the current 9-man. Go small around Mason, let Kawhi (our only capable option at PF) support Theis.
