They must have an offer out for Harden and he must be part of it. They’re just waiting for Morey to sh*t or get off the pot. Or, if someone else goes, maybe he’s kept as the 15th man. He didn’t play that badly in SL, but Moon was clearly better, so he suffers by comparison.

But if he is needed for salary matching in a trade, his money becomes guaranteed.

LAC needs to send out about 32.4M to bring Harden back. Let’s say the package comes out to $31.M–adding in Preston’s $1.8M salary would make the deal work, and $1.4M of his salary would become guaranteed. Even if it’s just to facilitate the deal and the Sixers cut him, Jason just got $1.4M for being in the right place at the right time.

There is always the possibility that he was given a promise to agree to this, as well… Clippers could have said “help us with this and we’ll put you on a two-way next year.” That’s 560k vs the standard 40k G-League salary. They also could have promised to re-sign him to exhibit 10 and then cut him again before sending him to the G-League, which would allow them to give him a 50k bonus that doesn’t count against the cap (whereas guaranteeing 50k of his current salary, they’d have to pay luxury tax on).

Morris/Terance/Norm for Harden/Tucker was just off by a hair but add Preston in and Viola!

This is no doubt the most likely reason they extended.

I’m guessing from his side, seems like they probably have little other options. How does his salary work during the offseason? I always assumed they just get game checks, so he’s not getting paid anything by just extending this date right? He could get cut on October 1st and be left with nothing?

Maybe Clippers have promised him a least a g-league roster spot, which is probably where he would end up anyways if they cut him. So he gets a shot at this guaranteed money, and worst case in October he’s making a g-league salary for the Ontario Clippers, which is what he would be doing anyways if they cut him today.
