I agree with Powell that it’s an “addition by subtraction.” Personally, I’m happy that they are gone.

This Clipper team will be better than most people believe.

A lot of discussion about Kawhi’s health obviously and who will start if he’s not ready, and to me I think the smartest approach would be to just plan on having him not play until after the first of the year. Even if he feels good opening night or shortly thereafter he’s not a cyborg and we should be looking to not only get him 110% healthy but also maximize the 30–50 total games he might have for a playoff seed and run not squander them in November and December. Also, I think we should be trying to roll with the Toronto model where they Played him sparingly and just made sure they had great chemistry so when they added him at full board late in the season they could make that run. Having him in and out of the lineup throughout the season will just screw up our rotations when we have all these new players that we need to find where they fit best. We should spend the early part of the season getting Zu and Terence’ rolls expanded along with seeing if DJJ can do more than 3 and D. Maybe Nico can helm the second unit with Dunn and he-who’s-name-shall-not-be-mentioned and we can find a way to be close to .500 by February–at which point we evaluate bringing Kawhi back and/or make a trade.

I guess this is my long-winded way of saying I’m fine with not bringing Kawhi back and trying to build some type of chemistry before we do. Seeing what these other guys can do will be pretty entertaining unto itself.

He’s also undersized so that accounts, in part, for his defensive shortcomings. I’d love it if one of the new acquisitions — Porter or Jones — could surpass him.
