It’s so cool how we can all come to this platform and use our voices.

I went to college in Omaha for 3 years and also made my way to Des Moines to play a G league game a couple years back. Wish I would’ve been connected with this site sooner so that we could’ve met up and got better acquainted.

Anyways, I appreciate your input, Shap. And I really enjoy the podcast as well.

thank you cole for another great piece, ive loved reading your work so far and im so glad we have your voice on our site.

Um, we’re not different and you’re a yutz for thinking we are.

Similar to what Taiji described above, as an Asian-American I’ll never know what it’s like to be black in America, but I do have some shared experiences growing up as a minority in Orange County (not Irvine lol), and from living in different parts of the country (I spent a few years in the Bay Area and in the DC area as well). I’m glad to see that players are standing up for their beliefs, but honestly, they shouldn’t have to do this to get our attention and spur action. Standing up to racism, making society a more equitable and welcoming place is a job for ALL of us.

Over the years I think we’ve all encountered at least a few outright racists, but I think what’s frustrated me more than those people (at least they’re easy to spot and not super common) is the number of people who are so unwilling to do even the most basic, easy stuff to help better society.

It’s not like we can reasonably expect everyone to actually be on the frontlines of these protests and to get beaten and sprayed with pepper spray. Nobody is asking a suburban mom with 4 young kids to sacrifice her children’s safety by getting wailed on by police/federal agents. But maybe it wouldn’t be too much trouble to…I dunno, vote for someone who takes these issues seriously and genuinely has empathy for those who have experienced the worst parts of society instead of someone who you (probably mistakenly) think will raise the value of your 401(k) by 1%? Or, how about instead of recoiling in horror, averting your gaze, and walking away when approached by a minority with a clipboard at a grocery store, you look them in the eyes, talk to them, or at least politely say “sorry, I can’t help today,” and treat them like a human being? Maybe get involved in your community and/or neighborhood, and actually talk/listen to some of your neighbors who don’t look/think like you? If you have friends who are in the police force, talk to them about their work, try to understand where they’re coming from, and maybe try to help them understand what their actions look/feel like to the rest of us?

Not everyone is able/willing to become MLK or Gandhi, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t little things *ALL* of us can do. It’s 2020, we need to be better than this.

These situations are already sad and frustrating enough with how brutally these black men are treated, but even more infuriating how minimally the consequences are for the cops. It’s disgusting.

Anyways, thanks for sharing. I too hope we get better.

I’m glad that you found a bit of relatability in this piece. It will always be a challenge for minorites to be treated as equals, but we can only hope for improvement.

Thanks for standing in solidarity.

I will never understand why people ask suck questions as “What is it like to be Jewish?” It seems pretty rude, and says a lot about them.

We HAVE to be for all HUMANS, we have to be EQUALISTS! I don’t care for the left or the right , I have beliefs from each and beliefs from neither . The country is sooo divided right now and any conspiracy theorist talking about a possible civil war is not that crazy of a person to Have those thoughts right now if you think about it. We all have much more in common then people think no mattter our different political beliefs races ages man woman or child. I hope for the future of ALL our children we can change adapt get better whatever we can do to improve life for all. Sorry for the long rant, I’ve been trying to stay out of political and racial topics with everything that’s been going on but I decided that talking (whether anybody agrees or disagrees with me or even judges me) NEEDS to happen in order to get better! Thank you for the awesome article Cole hope I didn’t ruin/ or offend you with what I’ve said my thoughts etc. BLM # Police Reform # Equality# All lives matter# And on a lighter note ...... clipper fans mattter👊🏻Peace!]]> I’m glad kawhi and others are wearing the shirts that say something along the lines you mentioned that all lives can’t matter until black lives matter. I think these would of helped at the beginning of BLM movement because I know a lot of people people that say all lives matter(which is correct) but right now and for a good WHILE BLM should be in the forefront of needing change now.
I believe the police have been needing reform ever since I grew up during the Rodney king riots. Rodney king was resisisting arrest high on pcp, I get that in situations like that that cops have to do something but obviously they went way overboard and I mean way overboard in the situation that was video taped. Everyone of those cops using excessive force deserved to lose there jobs and serve time for that! Unfortunately they didn’t. I really hate seeing people burn and loot but since those cops got off easily I UNDERSTAND people’s anger and rage to that specific MAJOR INJUSTICE!
What happened to Reginal Denny was just as bad (debatable) or even worse (debateable) only because he wasn’t high on pcp or committing any crime and THAT specifically added to more ongoing racism in America . And being high or drunk or even running from the police or commiting any non violent crime does not give and should not give the police the right to use excessive force on anybody or any race for that matter.
After watching the full body cam footage of George Floyd all the way until he’s deceased in the back of the ambulance and their trying perform cpr and reasssessitate him was soooo hard to watch. To be completely honest when I started watching the video from the beginning I was really pissed about the mind state that George Floyd was in. He clearly was afraid for his life right away telling the cops he had been shot before but at the same time (to me) he definitly seemed on something or definitely he had mental health issues. Him not complying was pissing me off so bad!!
Sooo bad! Because I’m thinking of all the ways his death could of been avoided.
However after he kicked his way or fell through the cop car and then the cops got on top of him it took a tiny bit for him to calm down ( the cop never should of had his knee and full weight on his neck)
He kept reiterating he couldn’t breath, his voice got lower as time went by, the cops had every chance to secure him and de-esculate the situation . And they fuckin didn’t! The cop on his neck imo complete asshole, (probably racist as well) killed George Floyd for no reason. He deserves life in prison or even death row imo for that neglecence and dumb ass shit he did. Heading George Floyd’s last “i can breathe was so fucking sad! I was really angry when George Floyd wasn’t complying and I mean really angry, but after seeing the knee to his neck and hearing him say his last I can’t breathe before he took his last breathe fucking made me almost more angry then I’ve been in my entire life. And seeing them trying to reassessatate him in the back of the ambulance was even more frustrating and one of the sadest things I’ve ever seen before. The guys trying to revive him seemed like their training was horrible and took for ever to start the process.
Brianna Taylor thing I think was worse
1. Because she was totally innocent of any crime and was shot from what I’ve read unarmed and in her own home during a raid gone bad or whatever they want to call it . My Heart goes out to both her and George Floyd’s families.
Haven’t seen a lot of info really come out on the Jacob blake thing. Don’t know if he was reaching for a weapon or not , it did seem like he was resisting arrest but even if he was reaching for a weapon in his car
The cops did not need to shoot him let alone shoot him seven TIMES! Straight ridiculous I don’t see any way the cop/s are going to get away with this one
but nothing shocks me anymore because
Our justice system is majorly flawed and has been for a super long time. I hope we get justice and again my heart goes out to his family.
I do wish that in some of these instances people would just comply with law enforcement. I think a lot of attitudes of kids today and people today is totally different then when I was younger . I mean I grew up as a white kid bumping cypress hill songs like “pigs” and rage against the machine songs like “fuck the police” but maybe it’s just me but it seemed like people complied more back then because you knew if you didn’t you would get F’d up for sure(which I don’t agree with) but my point being is that cops prolly don’t feel respected very much anymore and with all the videos that come out of people cell phone videoing them and all there body cams they’re supposed to be wearing I think it makes there job harder when there afraid too sometimes. It’s a really tuff situation to talk about for society but to be BETTER we need to talk and need REFORM most definitly.
As for racism everybody and I mean EVERYBOdY needs to get better at it.
You can say I’m not racist or I’ve never been racist but all it takes is for someone to be racist to you or a loved one and racism can be CREATED from any race.
My ex my sons mother is 100% Korean
She grew up in New Orleans, she had a lot and I mean a lot of black people say the most racist shit to her and bully her growing up . Definitly white people and a lot of other ms racist against her as well but in New Orleans she had alotta problems with black people being really fucked uo to her. Now I’m not saying that black people don’t have it the worst! I imagine they do ! But my ex has always been Leary of black people from her experience even though She knows that it’s not a blanket for all black people.
As a white kid growing up in racially diverse city of Long Beach I’ve had black Latino and Samoan people be racist to me for being the little white boy cracker etc. bullshit. Again I don’t and never did blanket an write race for the racism that I received because in the grand scheme of things it’s a few bad apples fucking it up for everyone else(while at the same time they are part of the major problem of making non racist people fucking racist! .
We have to treat every body the way we want to be treated I know it’s cliche but it’s the truth . We’ve got to live and work with each other and HELP each other no matter of race age or sex.
America has come along way for people to just act like it’s as horrible as it it is! It’s horrible and we’ve got to reform it for everybody but most importantly for African Americans who definitly have a lot of trashy asshole people of all races treating them like shit.
Our parents and grandparents mostly stuck to there own races/ethnicities when growing up and starting families. Sports art and music has brought my generation and those who follow to make it ok to love who you love and hang out with who you want to hang out with with no color lines age or sexual preference to stop us!
I have a son half white half Korean
I now have a daughter with my new baby’s mother who is half white and half Latina. America has changed for the good in ALOT of ways! At the same time we’ve stayed stagnant on a lot of bullshit as well that’s needs reform completely and a lot of other things to change.
People get robbed killed murdered or even just bullied or racial comments directed at them and this breeds racism.
I truely don’t know if it will ever completely go away even though I pray and wish it could🙏🏻 I understand how racism exists
People need to stop letting it be fit for tat and let it go, understand that this one person being a shithead and this one person does not speak for an entire race!
We HAVE to be for all HUMANS, we have to be EQUALISTS! I don’t care for the left or the right , I have beliefs from each and beliefs from neither . By: Taiji Miyagawa https://213hoops.com/being-black-in-america/#comment-3428 Tue, 01 Sep 2020 06:28:44 +0000 https://213hoops.com/?p=2121#comment-3428 Thank you, Cole, for this piece and open sharing of your contrasting experiences in Europe vs. the U.S. I am an Asian American who faces relative privilege compared to Black people in the U.S. but am able to empathize due to a history of also facing discrimination and violence (albeit, to lesser degree than facing murderous cops on a daily basis). Many times, I have been associated with “the enemy” and targeted just because of my looks.

I stand in solidarity with all those who defend Black life and our humanity as one people. I am glad the players took a stand. They set the standard – it is the people who make society run: Not the owners and the people who profit from the mistreatment of others. I see the problem is that the racist police and their unions are set up to defend the interests of the uber rich, and nothing will change until we force it to. I think many players have spoken to this and the message is spreading. We cannot separate the game that we love from the reality of what is going on in the larger society. We have learned from history that any advance that Black people make in society towards and end to racism and inequality helps lift us all towards a higher moral and ethical society.

I was just thinking about how disappointed I was at America being so far behind the rest of the world. Is it that people still think there are differences? I once had someone ask me “what’s it like to be Jewish?” as if I experience the world in a different way.

Or is it that people just need someone else to blame for whatever their problems are; and as a Jew I’ve seen plenty of that of course.

Ten years ago I worked for a company based in the Midwest, and when I travelled from L.A. to the Home Office I was always shocked by how ethnically undiverse they were at the management level. They also made racist comments that they didn’t even know were racist.
