There are two perspectives here: “why do you want a consolidation trade so we can acquire players who won’t provide help when depth issues arise?” and “why do you want to hold on to overqualified 11th and 12th men who won’t provide help in May and June?”

Yes, if the Clippers consolidate 2 or 3 of their top 11 guys for 1 upgraded starter, they’ll lose depth and it could swing some games against them in January and February when multiple guys are out. The first question is concerned with doing our best to win those regular season games. The second question is concerned with doing our best to win games in the playoffs and finals.

Depth this deep is a lose-lose for everyone, especially in the playoffs where the rotation shortens. The team misses out on possibly a better player. The players miss out on playing time to advance their careers and future paychecks.

The only benefit is injuries during the regular season. Any injury to Kawhi or PG13 in the playoffs makes the depth useless.

I think the idea is that a consolidation trade would help our depth at certain positions.

Also, there are diminishing returns on having such a deep roster. Either guys on the back end of the roster lose value due to lack of playing time or you play everyone relatively even, in which case everyone gets frustrated due to not being able to get playing time or develop rhythm.

I can’t understand why some of y’all speak on this consolidation trade so we can acquire players that won’t provide help when depth issues are needed. Trading just to appease is not smart business. I believe this squad 1-15 wants a chip and are willing to make the necessary sacrifice. Yes we need need a backup center but this will happen before camp guaranteed.

An easy A really. He was assumed to be wash from his Blazers run but he instead turned out the best 23 (guessing here) game run of his career.

He could have gotten a 3 year MLE, and when you see the full MLE deals signed this off season, his deal is very reasonable. The contract becomes a positive asset in a year too as an expiring deal for a rotation player glue guy. It wasn’t that long ago the Clips were doing desperate overpays for Crawford and Austin Rivers because they had no options besides minimum guys. This just gives the team the flexibility to do a consolidation trade during the next 2 season whether RoCo is included or it allows the team to package an extra wing with Mook (I consider Batum will never be traded considering the mutual lovefest and amiable deal making).
