To be clear, I’m not a diehard Acuff guy, but I take issue with folks asking this question about Acuff only, but not for any of the other guys. We should be holding all the prospects to the same standard.

I’d be happy with the WORST of those guys if we get other valuable assets. At #9 or #10 we don’t even need to concerned that LAC DIDN”T draft a PG.

Heck, there have been some #9 or #10s that have been stars..

Even if Acuff reaches his full potential, I am not convinced he can even be a #3 on a title contender, let alone a #1. To me he looks like a classic regular-season microwave scorer who has to be traded away eventually because he’s too much of a liability in the playoffs. We’ve seen this routine many times before with Jamal, Lou, Trez, etc. It’s just not good enough for a pick this high in a draft this loaded.

First off, we are so far from winning a title, even with Garland and Kawhi. By the time this team looks ready to make the leap to the next level, who knows what the NBA as a whole will look like and who else is on this roster. There are so many variables that are going to inevitably change over such a long period of time that I don’t think trying to evaluate any of the guys we draft with “immediate title shot” in mind is productive.

Second, if we’re gonna question whether Acuff can be a #1 on a contending team, we need to do this for all of the prospects. Does anyone think Wagler can be that guy? What about Flemings or Brown? Like if you legit believe that Wagler is the next SGA, then fine – I disagree, but at least I understand your position. But we need to evaluate Acuff against his peers, not against some hypothetical heightened standard. Even assuming that Acuff can’t be that guy (and for what it’s worth I agree), ok fine, then who is that guy that’s available to us at #5? It’s not fair to argue that Acuff isn’t good enough to elevate this team to a contender without also making that evaluation for the other guys who could be available at #5.

I don’t think any of Acuff, Brown, or Wagler are gonna develop into true #1 options on a championship team, but like, do you know how rare these guys are? There are a TON of amazing NBA players and HOFers who don’t meet that standard. D’Aaron Fox, Jamal Murray, Paul George, Dame Lilllard, Allen Iverson, hell CP3 – none of these dudes are/were good enough to be the #1 option on a championship team, but are you telling me that you wouldn’t be happy if we drafted Acuff and he turned out as good as Dame Lillard? We’re losing the plot if we’re trying to discourage the Clips from drafting Acuff because he isn’t going to be MJ, Kobe, or Steph. The goal isn’t to draft a guy who they think is going to plateau out as a guy who bumps us up from 40 wins to 45 wins – the goal is to take a guy who the Clips think is going to have the best career overall, even if it may cost us some wins in the short term.
