Acuff measured out a little better than expected, Wagler a little worse. Acuff’s athleticism and strength are an edge, and he might not be as big a defensive liability as expected. I like his assist numbers too. But it still seems odd to have him and Garland on the same roster.

You make a clear note of the basic essential item–Wagler is a lot more of a true point guard than Sanders.

Curious about your preference for Acuff, and would like to hear more of your thoughts on him. I feel like Acuff is a much stronger offensive engine than Wagler, but he duplicates Garland in too many ways. A really good, quickly available version of Acuff presents the same problems as Garland–tons of scoring, 3s, playmaking, but a liability on defense, effectiveness diminished by bigger and stronger top defensive guards. You really can’t play Acuff and Garland together, it doesn’t seem.

The possibility of getting Acuff makes Garland a trade asset, is one way to look at it.

You say “if available”–do you see one of the top 4 taking Acuff rather than one of the obvious choices. I guess MEM could ship out Ja and get some assets and picks for him, and then they might prefer Acuff over Boozer or Wilson. That would make things interesting. And Chicago is a bit of a wild card.

I also initially thought he was Kobe Sanders and that Kobe was bigger and stronger, while proving himself a capable shooter. But the more I watched the kid, the more I saw a real point guard who was the best shooter I observed in college this year. He gets a lot of rebounds (like Sanders), but he has a real bag to get into the paint, draw fouls and score. I don’t know how one can hype Boozer and then complain that Wagler just takes advantage of mismatches to score. Boozer has a very limited offensive game at this point in his career but people tout him even though all he does is take advantage of size mismatches.

The difference between Sanders and Wagler is that Wagler was a true offensive engine and had gravity on the court. Defenses focused on him and he still got buckets. I think the lack of explosiveness issue had more to do with Stojakovic being on the court as well as their bigs like Mirkovic and Ivisic. Illinois had a particular system but Wagler was often the bail out option.

I’d take Acuff over Wagler if available, but I think Wagler is going to be a very good NBA player who might be able to show some real gravity on the court.

Why trade Zu to get Zu 2? If we’re keeping Kawhi, Zu would’ve been a more experienced and better fit to really compete. There’s no way Mara would be good enough next season. I think you use this draft to get an elite guard or a 2/3 wing like Caleb Wilson because that’s what makes this draft special. If they want a big like Mara or Steinbach, go trade Kawhi for a second lottery pick.

It’s impossible to get a strong sense of how it will all play out, as there are just too many variables. They start with Kawhi and Garland as assets and trade pieces. Acuff is perhaps the better pick if you trade Garland, but trading Garland seems unlikely. It doesn’t make sense to have Garland and Acuff together, and that raises Wagler up to first position. What happens if you trade Kawhi?

Kobe Sanders was stunningly productive and solid. He could have been buried in Ty’s system and preferences for years, if things had gone differently. He did all sorts of things well, and his shooting just kept getting better and better. The whole thing was a really fun aspect of the season, watching him and Jordan Miller make good use of their minutes and become viable and valuable rotation players. They’re both on the edge and could be kind of marginal, and they’re old enough that their upside is limited, but they are solid and can give the Clippers real depth.

Kobe Sanders’ success is instructive for who Wagler could be and how he might be productive–that’s where the eerie similarities come in. Wagler seems like a 25% improvement over Sanders across the board–he’s seems quicker, with a better handle and playmaking instincts, putting up more 3s. Sanders is a little bigger and stronger, but Wagler is just 19, and growing into his body and strength should make him more effective at what he’s already doing, way ahead of Sanders’ schedule. Having very big, even huge games in the Big Ten and the NCAA tournament is meaningful–scoring 46 points against Purdue, or 12 rebounds against Houston, beating them, and 25 points against Iowa–Kobe Sanders never got close to any of that.

Apparently Wagler’s arms measured shorter than expected (6’5″ height, 6’6″ wingspan) and he didn’t shoot his 3’s very well at the combine. Meanwhile Acuff showed out athletically and has been getting a lot of hype. Ultimately I’m hoping Acuff goes somewhere in the top 4 because that should make the Clippers decision pretty easy.

Eerily similar interview to Sanders.
Calm & collected with quiet confidence in their ability.
Maybe the concern is about we will have 2 guys with comparable skill set while one was picked in late second round while the other will be high lottery pick.
But if we focus on getting elite playmaker who can shoot the ball well with enough size to switch both guard spot.
And the guy is young enough to develop. He know his growing area as rim finishing, floater and body strength.
There might be a better athletic dude to pick at the 5th spot. But in the long term, I still believe Wagler could be our main ball handler / deadeye shooter / instinctive problem solver for years to come. Let’s see what we will do with this pick.

This past regular season I only watched 1 or 2 of the Pistons’ games that weren’t against us, and I was surprised looking at his numbers in the box score afterwards, and I’m even more puzzled after seeing him in the postseason. He’s not like a BroLo type shooter, he’s not Al Jefferson in the post, he’s not a DJ-type freak athlete lob threat, he doesn’t have Jokic or Sengun-like passing ability, and he’s just ok as a rim protector. Like I’m not saying he’s terrible at any one of those, but usually when you’re talking a max-contract type of guy you’d excel at at least a few of those skills whereas Duren is just kinda ok at most of them (and downright bad at others, like passing). I obviously didn’t watch enough of his games, but I really just don’t understand how Duren put up such monster numbers in the regular season.

None of the fanbases he’s played for can stand him anymore. The Nets are probably the least soured on him, but only because Kyrie gets more of the blame for that team falling apart. Regardless, it’s not only a Warriors thing. KD is just incredibly unlikeable.

Blake is an odd example too because there’s still CP3 stans to this day in our fanbase who act like Blake was a glorified Stromile Swift who single-handedly held Chris back from winning rings. People wanted him traded for Melo or Kevin Love every year in his prime. I don’t think he was appreciated enough by our fans, to be honest.

I’m just not sure Mara has enough upside elsewhere to make up for his lack of speed, mobility and lateral quickness.
