They have a lot of the positive attributes that the wolves do but they are smarter and make fewer mistakes. KAT is so goofy on defense though…

Knicks-Pacers has been so much more enjoyable to watch so far than the flop-fest that was Game 1 of Thunder-TWolves.

Maybe the guys Frank drafts just suck, maybe Ty is too biased in favor of vets to give them a chance, or maybe (and I think this is more likely) Frank reaches on guys whose talent level is right on the line of “do they have any NBA level skills,” *and* Ty and the coaching staff as a whole just kinda sucks at handling young guys. When you have guys who aren’t talented enough to *force* their coaches to play them (e.g. SGA under Doc), there’s a lot of grey area and a lot of room for speculation/interpretation.

I kept yelling at the screen: Pass the effing ball, but they wouldn’t listen. Plus, JWms and SGA were in a league of their own and Edwards looked like a stubborn, entitled gunner. Wms is just so tough, underestimate him at your peril. And SGA–a slither monster par excellence using that skinny frame to flummox his defenders. They complain about his getting calls–he deserves every one of ’em. No favoritism there–like at all. Now that he’s won the mvp, the clips trade is going to pop up once again and we’re gonna look like saps.

Minnesota missed 35 or so wide open looks from the 3 pt line and didn’t get enough paint points. They played for a magnet ball and DiVincenzo/Conley/Reid/McDaniels pretty much flunked. Ant was mid. Gobert was non-existent.

Still, like often happens in a college game, the officiating had an outsized impact on the contest. SGA/OKC with 11 FTAs to 1 for Minn in Q1; Gobert in foul trouble on soft calls; SGA getting at least 3 if not 4 truly undeserved trips to the line. Give him credit for his continued aggressiveness and commitment to his style of play but he was 10/27 and had 14 FTAs, making 11.

I think Minnesota got psyched out by the SGA whistle and when Gobert went out they played more for the 3 ball because they didn’t expect to get calls; they expected SGA to get a lot of calls; and consequently they thought their best shot was to shoot their way out from the 3 pt line. I can’t say that I blame Finch. The first quarter itself saw the refs help claw OKC out of an early hole mainly through trips to the line.

We’ll see what happens in Game 2, but I think Minn should look to keep Gobert active offensively so that he can be present on defense. Just having a true big out there can extend the defense and make it harder for OKC to maneuver. If OKC’s role players are going to shoot 50% and the Wolves role players are going to shoot something like 18%, it will be a short series.

Frank has blown off the draft for years. He lies about “getting younger and more athletic” every postseason and then makes us older every year with his actual moves. They are both equally complicit in making the Clippers the retirement home of the NBA. It started with Doc, who had the same mindset and brought in people like Lue and Frank who were just as biased against young players as he was.

Jovan Buha had a great article about Ty Lue — esp. his stubbornness.

Unless the person themselves wants to change, adults do not change.

I can’t see Coach Lue playing young guys enough minutes to get over the bumps of excelling in the NBA.

It might not be, which speaks volumes about how bad that contract truly is.

Frank’s never been a very good GM, but he’s gotten worse the longer he’s been in the job. A few years ago, he would have at least recognized that Norm was unlikely to keep up his first-half level of play and shipped him out at peak value like he did with Tobias Harris. Now it’s like he’s completely oblivious and running the team on autopilot.
