They picked the lane of contending and the introduction of the second apron isn’t a good reason to give up on it while mismanaging your assets. If you want to attach an asset, imo you do it to Gordon’s contract (plus Morris maybe) in order to bring back a younger player and long-term salary

I mean, “MM is clearly washed so don’t play him much, if at all” seems like an easy adjustment too, but it took Ty 90% of the season to implement it (temporarily) so…yea.

He was a strong positive with Kawhi and PG, I don’t think we got enough compensation in Gordon. Gordon at 27, would have been somehting, but now?

Plus the whole “trade deadline plan”/”let’s now get Russ because we can” did not help either.

I would pay money to see Luke play for Spoelstra.

He will be missed by me and the fanbase.

I’m sure from the outside looking in, people would think Clipper fans are crazy for wanting Ty Lue gone. I’m kind of curious the real criticisms of Nurse. Most common one I hear is just playing his guys too many minutes, but that always seemed like a superficial criticism. Easy adjustment if that is your biggest problem. I think just the fact that we’ve seen him win it all with Kawhi (even if they got super lucky), makes it a kind of natural fit. Obviously Kawhi would know best and I think if he wanted him, the FO would have to make a move.

Bud probably has the longest track record of improving teams and taking teams deep into the playoffs. Just his playoff track record is suspect at best. Seems like he’s the anti-Ty Lue. Rack up a ton of regular season wins, but criticism has always been his ability to make adjustments in the playoffs. At least a little worrying.

Vogel obviously also has a history with PG so there is that aspect, but he has consistently put together some of the best defenses in the NBA. I feel like the Clippers have had the personnel to be a top 5 defense in the NBA, but haven’t found the right coach to put it all together. I think Vogel could definitely make some improvements on that end for the Clippers. I was hoping he’d come on as like an assistant to Ty, but that’s probably wishful thinking.

Can’t Ballmer just pay each of these guys like 10mil each and have the most super team of coaches ever?

He strikes me as having a grating personality. That said, I think he’d be good for 2 years and would defer to Frank. Bud would be the better personality fit, however.

Honestly the Raptors had a lot of similar issues this season in terms of team building (all wings, no Cs until they finally traded for Poeltl), which may have led to Nurse ultimately departing. Really though I’d love to hear from insiders/bloggers from those teams to see what their thoughts on their former coaches are.

Clippers: declining Gordon doesn’t get them under the second apron, they are over it next season one way or another. Declining it wouldn’t make it possible either to take on long-term salary for a younger player as they’re still over the apron, correct? So guaranteeing him and trading him later seems like the best move for the future – or keeping him if he looks good and they think they got a shot next season. Thoughts?

In 24-25, PG is more than likely to opt in. Kawhi could go both ways imo. Sign a max for the long-term or opt in. If he keeps up his level of play, regardless of injuries, he’ll be offered a max. To make it easier, I’ll assume an opt-in here: that leaves about 37 million to work with before hitting the second apron the way I read the summary of the CBA. Mann will probably be extended that year but the extension kicks in the year after that when PG might be gone so there’s not necessarily an issue. As in 23-24, starting point guard and backup center will be needs to address (and they will probably be addressed next season for both seasons). In addition to it, a 4, some other wings and getting younger in the process.

Team could both operate over or under the second apron from 24-25 onwards. To me, it really depends on how close they are to having a real shot.

My guess is EG will be guaranteed, with the possibility of being traded if the season looks like a disappointment. In that case he’ll be traded for a younger player steady enough to contribute but with some upside (more the Mann-type than the Hyland-type). They either re-sign Russ and/or Plumlee or a replacement, for two years or 1+1 contracts. 24-25 could go either way, big overhaul or minor changes/mostly running it back.

What do you think, khyber?

He would have been useful in the playoffs (though our fate will always be tied to Kawhi and PG’s health).
