What Russ was able to bring to this team helped immensely on & off the court. Like with any player, he has flaws but he took a huge load off of 213s hands. You couldn’t watch a game a tell me they didn’t look fresher, on both ends, at the end of games. The advanced numbers looked good with Mann in the starting lineup but they they had some HORRIBLE finishes to some of those games, & in others, the comp was TRASH! So how meaningful were those stats?

The thing is, folks just wanna throw out numbers without context, cuz the majority of folks are gonna run with it. If you can’t provide context & say WHY things are or aren’t working though, then it doesn’t matter!

Lastly, this has NOTHING to do with Mann, cuz he’s a good player, but the discourse surrounding him.

If Mann was the player that everyone on here thinks he is, he would’ve stayed as the point guard. The fact is, Kawhi and PG want less on ball duties and Mann doesn’t relieve that.

Here’s a look at how the % of Assists Kawhi and PG were responsible for changed over the season

Pre Mann as starting PG
Kawhi: 26.6
PG13: 31.8
Mann: 19.1

When Mann was starting PG
Kawhi: 25.5
PG13: 30.2
Mann: 19.6

When Russ was starting PG
Kawhi: 19.3
PG13: 26
Mann: 20.5
Russ: 44.7

When Mann was PG, Kawhi and PG13 were still responsible for more assists than him but their burden went down 1%. When Russ became the PG their burden went down 4% for PG and 6% for Kawhi. AND Russ was able to be responsible for more assists than either of them. This is why they wanted him.

Is it reasonable to change your starting point guard back and forth depending on if Kawhi/PG are playing?

The more interesting question might be: is the answer to the question of fit with the stars vs fit without the stars actually that different?

NBA.com 5 man line ups
Mann + Kawhi, George, Morris, Zubac. 142 minutes across 10 games: Net Rating 14.8

Westbrook + Kawhi, George, Morris, Zubac. 112 minutes across 7 games: Net Rating 14.6

And we all know Westbrook was playing with a worse version of Morris than Mann was.

The 3 man line ups were basically the same too if you give the team just 1 game to get acquainted (i.e. remove the Kings game)

Mann + PG/Kawhi. 320 minutes across 28 games: Net Rating 7.7

Westbrook + PG/Kawhi. 198 minutes across 9 games: Net Rating 8.4

And the net rating for the Westbrook/PG/Kawhi continued to go up and up after that game.

So as I said, I’m not sure if those two questions have two different answers.

Yes warriors had ruff season , most of it without wiggins, but warriors were defending champs and still put up a good fight.
I can’t say even if fully healthy we would have beaten any of those teams. Can’t say it all but not even say it with confidence
Which is part of my point. Clippers just were not that good this year!

I think the Kings beat the Lakers. Warriors were the 6th seed and not great all season, and even worse against the Lakers.

Series against Denver might change my mind slightly, since I do have a ton of respect for Denver. I still wouldn’t be surprised of Denver takes care of business in like 5.

Wing and big
We got 2 wings that need space and pg13 can be hella streaking shooting.
I also don’t fully agree on your lakers falling into the wcf take.
They were one of the best teams and defensively after ASB went to play in, advanced , yes ja got injured and all his gun toting bullshit , but warriors were no easy opponent. Now they got denver , totally different beast , but came back from 20 and look like a team that gonna take denver to 6-7 games .
Could kawhi and pg13 raise their values ? Absolutely , could they get injured more? Especially kawhi ? Again absolutely.

I’m still concerned if you’re really going to get much back for them, but AD in these playoffs has certainly raised his value if they wanted to trade him this summer. There were plenty of times AD had very little value as he just seemed like he couldn’t stay on the court. I think there will be an opportunity at some point next year where they do raise their value back to that superstar level, it’s just a matter of if you can find a trade and are willing to pull the trigger on a trade when they are looking like they could carry you to a championship.

The Lakers just fell into the WCF, a feat it took the Clippers like the most herculean effort ever to accomplish. And a lot of it has been on the back of their seemingly always injured star. Makes you hope it just takes the right circumstances for the Clippers to do the same. But things always seem to go right for the Lakers, and it’s just frustrating.

Can’t say they’ve been great together when they rarely play most the season together. And I disagree that it’s a clear cut no brainer decision on our stars and going in the right direction.
Also from what Lucas said you’re gonna have to decide between plum and Russ. We’re too much over the cap to pay bird right for plum and give Russ anything over the min. I don’t feel confident Russ will take the min because he loves the clippers so much, I could be wrong.
